Tortola, British Virgin Islands, 14 July 2023 – In recent weeks, the management team of the British Virgin Islands Ports Authority (BVIPA) conducted a series of comprehensive disaster preparedness exercises that included a tabletop exercise and extensive walk-throughs of its facilities. These proactive actions demonstrate the Authority’s commitment to safeguarding lives, protecting infrastructure, and maintaining operational continuity during potential severe weather.
The tabletop exercise served as the first and crucial component of the multi-pronged approach to the disaster preparedness strategy, it brought together members of the management team to simulate emergency scenarios and assess the response plans. The tabletop exercise provided an invaluable opportunity to identify strengths, uncover areas for improvement, and enhance overall readiness in dealing with hurricane-related emergencies.
Additionally, a team of managers and supervisors conducted extensive walk-throughs of the port facilities, systematically assessing vulnerabilities, and reinforcing disaster preparedness measures. These walk-throughs involved comprehensive inspections of facilities, equipment, and infrastructure, with a focus on critical areas. By identifying potential risks and ensuring the readiness of resources and personnel, the BVIPA aims to mitigate the impact of hurricanes on port operations and facilitate swift recovery.
